Workshop and exhibition "JOURNEY IN THE WORLD OF OUR WISHES" Exhibition: 28/12/2008, 13h - 23/01/2009 Kulturni centar REX Jevrejska 16 Beograd www.rex.b92.net see photos of the exhibition “Journey in the world of our wishes” was the second of a series of artistic-educational workshops with youngsters and was organized in December 2008 by Bureau for culture and communication. The final exhibit at the cultural center Rex in Belgrade presents nine photomontages that were realized during the workshop at the Roma settlement in Krnjača and at several locations in Belgrade. The authors of the photo montages are between 9 and 13 years old: Dikana Bala, Dalibor Bislimi, Milica Bislimi, Suad Bislimi, Altona Behrami, Sabina Krasnić, Serđad Krasnić, Nimon Krasnići i Besim Neziraj. The workshop was conducted by the artist Rena Rädle in collaboration with grupa 484 and with kind support of family Krasnić from Krnjača. In the center of the works are the authors themselves, who projected a scenario in which they would present themselves, using the technique of photomontage. The workshop took place in the field in small groups. Everybody took pictures of her or his “background” in the city with a semiprofessional digital photo camera. In the field, they learnt that it was not possible to photograph everything as it was planned: to enter the zoo garden they would have to pay entrance fee, it was not allowed to take pictures of the swimming pool at Tašmajdan without permission and until they reached the Pionirski stadion it was dark already… So that some ideas had to be changed and other solutions were found. After the shooting, the best results were chosen, the figures selected and put together in one picture. For many it was the first time working at the computer, but the effort was forgotten the moment, when background and figure were joined in new, surprising pictures. In the end, everybody added a sentence commenting the resulting photomontage. The project was made possible through the German embassy and the Ministry of Culture Serbia. Bice prikazan film "In Transit" a imacemo mogucnost da pogledamo i delove filma "Two or Three Things about Activism". Dok putujemo Rumunijom u godini njenog prikljucenja Evropskoj Uniji, narativ reflektuje na znacenja tranzicije, re-upisivanje istorije i odnosa izmedu slika i secanja. Dok 13 protagonista/kinja iz anarhistickih grupa i ekoloskih aktivista/kinja do NGO-a, diskutuje o aktivizmu u Rumuniji i njegovom istorijskom kontekstu, snimateljka filma reflektuje svoje licne motivacije. Njeni video radovi reflektuju rastuci interes o globalizaciji, nacionalizmu i postkomunizmu, i manifestuju kriticku perspektivu kroz status dokumenta, istorije i memorije. The presentation will include a screening in full of In Transit and excerpts from Two or Three Things about Activism. Commonplaces of Transition is a collaborative video project by D Media (Romania), in collaboration with Ak-Kraak (Germany), Interspace (Bulgaria) and K:SAK (Moldova). The aim of the project is to open up a critical dialogue about the shape of transition and other alternatives than simply "catching up" with the global market. The project has produced 8 videos on themes including the remapping of borders and identities, the transformation of labour and the evolution of activism. In Transit (30 min, 2008) is a diary of a journey through space and time, composed of subjective impressions of the present and childhood memories of the past. While traveling across Romania in the year of its EU accession, the narrative reflects on the meaning of transition, the re-writing of history and the relation between images and memory. Two or Three Things about Activism (73 min, 2008) is a counter-documentary based on a distinction once made by Godard between making a political film (a film about a political struggle) and making film politically. While 13 protagonists, from anarchist groups and environmentalists to NGOS, discuss activism in Romania and its historical context, the filmmaker reflects on her own motivations. The talk will focus on aesthetics and politics, on strategies of counter-documentary and on what Godard meant by "making film politically," which has important implications for activist art. Making film politically means questioning the dominant forms of producing images and sounds, but also those of the "opposition." Today much activist art has become propaganda in reverse, a cheerleader for social movements that is devoid of self-reflection. The videos in the Commonplaces project attempt to find different forms of expression where art and resistance can meet, forms that question the automatisms that have become part of activism itself. Joanne Richardson is living and working in Cluj (Romania) as a theorist, artist and program director of D Media (www.dmedia.ro). She is the editor of Subsol (subsol.c3.hu), a webzine on activist art and media theory, and of two books on digital culture. She has written essays on the radical left, experimental film, video activism, tactical media, free software, the myth of authorship and copyleft. Her videos reflect an ongoing interest in globalization, nationalism and postcommunism, and manifest a critical perspective toward the status of documents, history and memory. On 10th of August 2008 the drawings were presented at the Cultural Centre Požarevac in the frame of the exhibition opening „Art Interventions – The Return of the Gastarbajters“. The first workshop took place in Stari Kostolac at a settlement of Roma refugees from Kosovo. Some of the children go to school, others beg on the street. The families live under harsh conditions, partly in houses abandoned after the Second World War by their German owners, partly in shags. The second group we worked with were children from Roma families who are working in Austria for 15 and more years. Each summer, they are spending their holydays in their home village Veliko Crniće. Here they have built huge beautiful houses. The third workshop was done in the park in front of the library of Požarevac with Serbian children mostly living in flats in the center of the city. Each workshop consisted of two units. One part was individual work with pencil on paper. The children were asked to draw the house of their dreams and to present it to the others. The other was an interactive group work, drawing together on a transparent plastic foil from both sides. The foil would later be held up against the sky and be photographed from below. To bring all children together for an exhibition of their works turned out to be more challenging than expected, as the representative of the Roma organization was first reluctant towards the idea of the refugees’ children attending the public event at the cultural centre. In the end everybody came and it was a great opening. One of the adults from the refugees’ settlement wants to go on working with the children and to encourage them to draw on different materials. The workshop was directed by Danijela Pivašević-Tenner, Nannette Vinson and Rena Raedle and was realized in collaboration with the International Romani Union Serbia (http://iru-srbija.org) and the library of Požarevac in the frame of: „Art Interventions – The Return of the Gastarbajters“ Curator: Noa Treister Co-workers: Alex Nikolić, Bojan Gačević, Gordan Bojković The project is realized by KUD Art Klub Kučevo in cooperation with the Cultural Centre Požarevac, Biro Beograd and Neocom Vienna. Dmytri lives in Berlin with his wife Franziska and their children Henriette and Nikolai. With Telekommunisten, the Art & Economics Group, and Venture Communism, as well as the related writings and activties, Dmytri Keiner encourages a critical analysis of the social and economic relations of communications and promotes the ideal of worker's self-organization of production as a means of class struggle. Since organizing the 1997 Plunderpalooza festival of cultural appropriation in Toronto, Dmytri has been a critic of Intellectual Property, especially of copyright and has been actively involved in the Free Software and Free Culture communities, his most recent article on the subject, "Copyfarleft, Copyjustright, and the Iron Law of Copyright Earnings" extends his criticism to the Creative Commons and proposes a theoretical alternative license which prohibits reproduction by means of private property and wage labour. Dmytri is currently investigating the process of the stratification of the Internet, especially the process by which peer-to-peer technology is being marginalized, restricted and replaced by centralized, client-server systems, extending the analysis he co-developed in the Mute Magazine article "InfoEnclosure 2.0" and is also developing the first in a series of mis-communicative artworks titled "For Miss Information Call," as a part of the Hack.Fem.East exhibition opening on May 9th, in Berlin.
